Job Description
Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) is looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to join our museum as the Director of Education & Public Programs. OMA seeks to hire a museum educator who looks at art education through the lens of 21st century learning and has an innovative spirit. The Director of Education & Public Programs will lead the museums education and public programming initiatives including the launch of a new annual fundraising event in an effort to create sustainable program support.
Qualifications: Candidates will be creative in their approach to engaging learners, community partners, and launching new initiatives. Must work well both in a fast-paced team environment and individually. Strong creative problem solving and interpersonal skills are essential. Knowledge and experience in arts education is essential, experience with educationally related fundraising preferred. Strong candidates must have the ability to engage educators and staff at local educational institutions as well as OMAs key donors and trustees as an outstanding representative of the museum.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director. This position will also work in collaboration with OMA staff to expand and deliver on the museums education and public programming and lead a group of educational advisors.
Duties pertaining to Education
Conceive and implement education programs through a deep understanding of learning pedagogy and styles with a fresh attitude and approach
Work with community and other civic leaders to create effective partnerships to broaden the scope and reach of the museums initiatives
Establish and grow formal relationships with faculty and administrators of primary, secondary and higher education institutions in the region
Train and manage volunteers, interns, and other educators
Create substantive partnerships with a range of community and arts organizations
Oversee classes to ensure students, teachers, parents, and museum educators are engaged at the highest level
Lend perspective on interpretive/education efforts with docents and educators, including developing scripts for new groups and new exhibitions
Devise and maintain effective methods of tracking outcomes and evaluation metrics
Duties pertaining to Public Programs
Oversee all classes, lectures and events (i.e. artist talks, gallery tours)
Lead OMAs public programming for the community with a focus on families with children
Work with museum staff to plan and promote special events or campaigns
Work with museum staff and the Director of Marketing to promote museum events and programs
Work with Executive Director, other staff, and volunteers/committees to:
o Evaluate and grow existing programs and events
o Ensure that all programs and events meet and exceed expectations
o Develop appropriate current and future programs and events
Other
Launch a new annual fundraising program such as a youth art auction that leverages activities of the education initiatives for ongoing support
Work with the development staff to develop proposals for funding, including grants, foundation and sponsorship materials
Manage and oversee department budget with oversight from the Executive Director
Assure the safety of visitors, staff, works of art, and museum facility by following and enforcing all related policies and procedures, in the planning and execution of programs
